Bruny Island

A land apart, an island in time – that's Bruny.

Bruny is a 15-minute crossing by car ferry from Kettering, 25 minutes south of Hobart. On the island, country roads loop around North Bruny, then cross the narrow Neck to South Bruny and the seaside hamlets of Adventure Bay, Alonnah and Lunawanna. Bruny is an island of beaches and forests, wildlife and heritage.

In the north, gentle crescents of golden sand smile, rare birds flit through the eucalypt canopy and Dennes Point's beachside shacks snuggle into the coastal scrub. To the south, Adventure Bay is a haven of history.

The wild Southern Ocean crashes on the sweeping expanse of Cloudy Bay Beach and the Cape Bruny light flashes its message of warning and welcome.

Between, on a narrow thread of land, penguins and shearwaters nest in the safety of the sheltering dunes. In a day you can explore lonely beaches, walk through towering rainforest, gaze towards Antarctica beyond the empty southern horizon and quench your thirst in Australia's most southerly pub. (Or is it? Ask a friendly islander in the bar to tell you the whole story ...)

You can also explore the rugged Bruny coastline on an adventure cruise, where you are likely to be joined by pods of friendly dolphins as you discover soaring cliff faces, gliding sea eagles and fur seal colonies. During winter there is a good chance you will spot a migrating whale. All year round you are assured of stunning natural beauty, so whether you choose to explore Bruny Island by foot, by car or by sea, always keep your camera handy!
